Sometimes these 78s sing, sometimes they scrape, sometimes they wobble or boing or ripple or just go plinkety plink. String instruments from a vast assortment of exotic locales, & they were all recorded long enough ago to be incalculably precious. But the fragility of their journey to your ears is immediately offset by the crackling vivacity of the performances & tones. Ouds, veenas, violins, and several instruments you didn’t know existed (like the diddley bow of Uganda that gets made out of a bull’s horn). From patriotic anthems to casual improvisations, Jonathan Ward, as always, uses music to open a door on a whole lost world.
